Objective
You win the pot by holding the best five-card hand at showdown, or by betting so that every other player folds. You build your hand from your two private cards and five shared cards.
Hand rankings (highest to lowest)
- Royal flush: A-K-Q-J-10 of the same suit.
- Straight flush: five consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Four of a kind: four cards of the same rank.
- Full house: three of a kind plus a pair.
- Flush: five cards of the same suit.
- Straight: five consecutive cards of mixed suits.
- Three of a kind: three cards of the same rank.
- Two pair: two different pairs.
- One pair: two cards of the same rank.
- High card: the highest card when nothing else is made.
How a hand is played (Texas Hold’em)
- Blinds: two players post forced bets, the small blind and the big blind, to start the pot.
- Pre-flop: each player gets two private cards, then a round of betting.
- Flop: three shared cards are dealt face up, then betting.
- Turn: a fourth shared card is dealt, then betting.
- River: a fifth shared card is dealt, then the final betting round.
- Showdown: remaining players reveal their hands, and the best five-card hand wins.
Betting actions
- Fold: give up your hand and any chips already in the pot.
- Check: pass without betting, only when there is no bet to match.
- Call: match the current bet.
- Raise: increase the bet, so others must pay more to stay in.
- All-in: bet all of your remaining chips.
Common terms
- Dealer button: marks the dealer position. It moves one seat each hand.
- Pot: the total chips bet in a hand.
- Kicker: the highest unused card, used to break ties between similar hands.
- Bluff: betting to make others believe you hold a stronger hand.
Common beginner mistakes
- Playing too many hands instead of folding weak ones.
- Calling large bets out of curiosity or pride.
- Forgetting the hand rankings, especially flush versus straight.
- Chasing losses by moving to higher stakes.
Risks and responsible play
Poker combines chance and decision-making, but even good decisions lose over short stretches. A strong hand can be beaten on the last card, and losses can build up quickly.
Check that real-money games are allowed where you live, play only with money you can afford to lose, set a limit before you start and never chase losses. You can lose everything you deposit, and withdrawals are never guaranteed. See Responsible Gaming.
Check the law first. Real-money online games are restricted or banned in India under national and state laws. Read Is Rummy App Legal in India? before you play for money. Every risk of playing is yours.
Poker FAQ
What is the best hand in poker?
A royal flush: A-K-Q-J-10 of the same suit.
Which is higher, a flush or a straight?
A flush beats a straight.
What does the big blind do?
It is a forced bet that starts the pot, so there is always something to play for.
Is poker a game of skill or luck?
Both. Strategy matters over many hands, but luck decides single hands, and real-money play can lose money.
Are all poker apps the same?
No. Variants, blinds and buy-ins differ. Read the table rules before you sit down.
